چکیده

Spilogale putorius (Eastern Spotted Skunk) is a small, secretive carnivore that has substantially declined throughout the eastern United States since mid-1900s. To better understand current status of Eastern Skunks, we studied survival and reproduction S. p. (Appalachian subspecies across 4 states in central southern Appalachian Mountains from 2014 to 2020. Using encounter histories 99 radio-collared Skunks Kaplan–Meier known-fate analysis, calculated mean annual adult rate 0.58. The long-term, range-wide decline of a once common carnivore: the eastern spotted skunk (Spilogale putorius)

The eastern spotted skunk (Spilogale putorius) was once common throughout the midwestern and southeastern United States, with consistent annual range-wide harvests of 100 000 animals. In the 1940s, however, populations seemingly crashed and the species is currently listed by various state agencies as endangered, threatened, or ‘of concern’ across much of its range. We examined long-term harvest...

Summer Resting and Den Site Selection by Eastern Spotted Skunks (spilogale Putorius) in Arkansas

Denning and resting site use by radiocollared eastern spotted skunks (Spilogale putorius) in the Ouachita Mountains of western Arkansas was investigated from May through August 2005 and 2006. We identified and characterized microhabitat and landscape characteristics of 127 resting and den sites. Sites were located in burrows excavated by other mammal species (48%), in decayed or burned root sys...

Behavioral measures of auditory streaming in ferrets (Mustela putorius).

An important aspect of the analysis of auditory "scenes" relates to the perceptual organization of sound sequences into auditory "streams." In this study, we adapted two auditory perception tasks, used in recent human psychophysical studies, to obtain behavioral measures of auditory streaming in ferrets (Mustela putorius). One task involved the detection of shifts in the frequency of tones with...

Outbreak of canine distemper in domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius furo).

In 2006 an outbreak of canine distemper affected 14 young domestic ferrets in Barcelona, Spain. Their clinical signs included a reduced appetite, lethargy, dyspnoea, coughing, sneezing, mucopurulent ocular and nasal discharges, facial and perineal dermatitis, diarrhoea, splenomegaly and fever. Late in the course of the disease, general desquamation and pruritus, and hyperkeratotic/crusting derm...

Motion perception deficits in albino ferrets (Mustela putorius furo)

Albino ferrets contrary to their pigmented conspecifics show no optokinetic nystagmus. Therefore, in this study motion perception was compared between pigmented and albino ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) trained to discriminate between coherently moving random dot patterns and dynamic noise stimuli in a two-alternative forced choice task. Fully coherently versus incoherently moving patterns cou...
